Soil structure

  • An ideal soil (by volume) consists of 25% air, 25% water, 45% minerals, 5%OM,
  • Soil structure houses these components.
  • Way in which sand, silt & clay assemble.
  • Primary particles (sand, silt & clay) grouped together in the form of aggregates (secondary particles)
  • Nature of the arrangement of primary particles into naturally formed secondary particles, called aggregates,
  • Aggregate is a group of soil particles cohering in such a way that they behave mechanically as a unit.
  • Natural aggregates-peds; artificially formed soil mass-clod.
  • The peds reunite to form soil structure.
