Objectives of drainage :-

  • Objective of drainage is to lower the soil moisture content of the upper layer of soil permitting oxygen penetration to the crop roots and diffusion of carbon dioxide from the roots

 

Benefits of drainage :-

  • Improves soil structure
  • Facilities early ploughing and planting
  • Provides more available soil moisture and plant food increasing the depth of root zone soil
  • Reduces soil erosion increasing water infiltration into soil
  • Lengthens the crop growing season
  • Favors growth of soil bacteria
  • Leaches excess salt from soil
  • Assures higher soil temperature
  • Improves sanitary and health condition
  • Increases and perpetuates productivity of soil
