Off-seasons vegetable cultivation techniques in Nepal

1. Utilizing with climate of the country:

• Geographically Nepal is very rich and have the diverse range of the climate.
• Utilizing these micro-climate same vegetable can be grown as seasonal in one place and off- seasonal crop in another place.
• For example , vegetables like radish, pea, cabbage, cauliflower produced in summer and rainy in Tistung, Palung and Daman of Makwanpur district is considered as off –season in Kathmandu and Pokhara and Terai regions.

2. Changing in the cultivation techniques

• In Nepal some vegetables can be grown by changing their cultivation time.
• In lower belt and inner terai of Nepal, cucurbitaceous vegetables are produced by growing two months earlier, however it needs polybags

3. Use of hybrid varieties:

• Use of hybrid vegetables is wide spread for producing vegetables in early, medium, and late seasons .
• Their uses has caused the possible for producing vegetables for the longer period of time and making them available for all round the year.
• For example in cauliflower;
• Early variety: Sarlahi, Deepali, Kriti, Snow King, Silvercup-360
• Medium variety: Kathmandu local, Snow crown, Milky way

4. Creating useful environment

For the protection of heat : • Use of thatches, irrigation, hormone, use of heat tolerant varieties etc For the protection in cold

• Use of polypots and plastic house, use of hot beds , mulching, use of hormones, use of cold tolerant varieties.
