Vegetable classification

  • They are the edible succulent plants usually used in cooked form
  • Vegetables are classified as:
  1. Plants grown for aerial portions
  2. Plants grown for underground portions

 

I. Plants grown for aerial portions

a. Cole crops:-

Cole crops belongs to family cruciferae

Examples: Cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, knol khol etc

 

b. Legumes and pulses

  • Belongs to family leguminosea
  • Examples: Pea, Bean, Soybean etc

 

c. Leafy vegetables

  • Crops grown for their leaves
  • Example: Broad leaf mustard, Spinach (Paalungo), Cress (chamsur) etc

 

d. Solanaceous fruit vegetables crops :-

  • Crops belongs to solanaceae family
  • Example: Egg plant, tomato, pepper etc

 

e. Cucurbits or Vine crops

  • Crop belongs to Cucurbitaceae family
  • Example: Cucumber, squash, melons, gourds etc

 

f. Salad crops

  • Crops grown for salad purpose
  • Example: Lettuce, celery

 

g. Miscellaneous

  • Perennial vegetables like drum stick and asparagus
  • Vegetables like okra and sweet corn

 

II. Plants grown for underground portions

a) . Roots :

  • Crops with swollen roots
  • Example: Carrot, Radish, Sweet potato etc

 

b) Bulbs and Corms

  • Crops grown for underground bulbs and corms
  • Examples: Onion, Garlic and Colocasia

 

c) Tuber crops

  • Example: Potato
