Washing and drying

  • Washing is to remove dust and dirt. Washing can be accomplished during pre-cooling.
  • It is feasible in some fruits and vegetables. After washing drying is also necessary.
  • Sodium hypochloride (NaOCL) can be used to disinfect @ 15000 ppm in citrus in other 100-150 ppm active ingredients].
  • Bananas are usually washed to remove dirt, latex and treated with fungicides.
  • Sometimes washing spreads, the microorganism, so care should be taken to avoid contamination.
  • The water should be dried or eliminated from the surface of the commodity before packing, if it is not treated with fungicides.
  • Crops like onion, garlic, potato, sweet potato, strawberry and mushroom should not be washed. Washing can be practiced in mango, banana and leafy vegetables.
