Major Steps of Land Reform (1950-before 1964)

  • Promulgation of land in 1951 for preparing a list of tenants in Kathmandu valley
  • Appointment of Land Reform Commission in 1952 to examine problems of land tenure and agriculture credit.
  • Enactment of Land Act, 1957 granting security of tenants and fixing 50% of the produce as rent.
  • In 1959, the Birta (rent-free land) system was abolished and all Birta land was covered into Raiker land by granting ownership rights to tenants on such land.
  • In 1963, experiment in- land Reform- were made on a very limited scale in accordance with agricultural reorganization Act 1963,- tenancy rights to the tillers and credit to the farmers.
