Germplasm Conservation

  • Sum total of genes present in a species is called germ plasm.
  • Conservation has to be done in such a way that there is minimum risk of its loss and that it can be either planted directly in field or can be prepared for planting.
  • It can be done by two ways:

A) Insitu conservation:

  • National Park, Biosphere reserve, Gene sanctuary.

B) Exsitu Conservation:

  • Seed banks

i) Orthodox seeds : Moisture 5% or low.

ii) Recalcitrant seeds: Moisture 12-30%.

  • Plant banks
  • Cell and organ bank
  • Shot tip banks
  • DNA bank
