Land tenure system (Raikar, Guthi & Kipat)

  • Raikar refers to that land on which taxes are payable to. the government and is listed in the official records.
  • Guthis are socio-economic institutions that fund their obligations from incomes off of cultivated or leased land as assets.
  • Kipat is a communal land tenure system in which land belonged to the local community under “customary law” and not to the state like in the rest of Nepal.
