Steps of transformation

  1. Binding: during transformation, donor DNA comes in contact with outer surface of the bacterial cell i.e. receptor cell. This occurs due to random collision. The first step in binding of donor DNA is temporary then donor DNA binds permanently to the cell surface at several receptor sites and associated themselves.
  2. Penetration: The transformed ds-DNA penetrates the bacterial cell and bounds permanently.
  3. Synapsis: the chromosomal DNA of recipient cells then unwinds and initiates re-pairing with donor DNA. This process is known as Synapsis.
