• Occurs in both biosynthesis and degradation reaction.
• Enol formation of an aldehyde or ketone.

• The non-enzymic glycosylation of protein in plasma and some tissue is characteristics of diabetes.
• Modification of lens protein may contribute to cataract formation.
• Modification of laminin and other proteins of the basement membrane may be important in the long-term complications of diabetes.
• Measurement of level of glycosylated hemoglobin in a diabetic patient can be used to monitor the long-term management of the disease.
