Chromatographic paper

  • For chromatographic analysis, three properties of the paper are important.

a) Rate of the flow of the mobile phase:

  • Preference given to slower paper.

b) Capacity of the paper and its mechanical strength:

  • Ability to soak up a larger amount of solvent i.e. with greater thickness and fibre density.

c) Presence of trace impurities:

  • May cause affect on the detection or bind the substance chromatographed.
