Lipoproteins (Lipids + Proteins)

  • Globular micelle-like particles.
  • Consists of non-polar core of triglycerols and cholestroyl esters,
  • Protein part of lipoprotein is called apolipoprotein and acts as cellular targeting signals.

Classes of lipoprotein

a) Chylomicrons:

  • Transport dietry glyceride and cholesterol from intestine to tissue.

b) VLDL:

  • Transport glyceride from liver to tissue.

c) LDL:

  • Delivers cholesterol to the cells.

d) IDL:

  • Pickup cholesterol from HDL to become LDL.

e) HDL:

  • Delivers cholesterol to liver.

Note:

  • Intestinal mucosal cells convert dietary FA to triacylglycerol and package them.
  • Particles are released to intestinal lymph.
  • Transported through lymphatic vessels.
  • Blood stream then delivers chylomicrons throughout the body.
