Nature of genetic code

  • There are 64 codons for 20 amino acids. 61 codons are informational.
  • The codons UAA, UAG and UGA are stop signals causing chain termination and release from the ribosome of the nascent polypeptide.
  • Polypeptide chain initiation is always encoded by AUG.
  • Mutation that are simple base, substitution may be neutral.
  • Message is read in 5’ à 3’ direction.
