Reactions promoted by radiations

  • UV light induces the condensation of two ethylene group to form a cyclobutene ring.

 

i.e. Adjacent pyrimidine –— radiation– >  cyclobutene pyrimidine dimers.

  • Ionization radiations can cause ring opening and fragmentation of bases.

 

Note: DNA –Replication – DNA

          DNA — Transcription —>  RNA – Translation —> Protein

 

  • Alkylating agents can alter certain bases of DNA.
  • Dimethyl suphate can methylate a guanine to yield O6-methylguanine which can’t base pair with cytosine.
