Structure and cell wall composition of bacteria E. coli ( Gram negative)
- Cell is surrounded by a plasma membrane.
- No sub-cellular organelles, only infolding of plasma membrane called mesosomes.
- DNA is within cytosol to form nucleoid.
- 2µm long and less than 1 µm in diameter.
- Has protective outer membrane and inner plasma membrane.
- Between membrane is thin but stronger layer of peptidoglycan ( Peptidoglycan gives cell shape and rigidity).
- Plasma membrane contain protein capable of transporting certain ions and compounds into the cell and transport wastes out.
- Flagella helps in movement of the bacteria.
- DNA is 1000 times longer than the cell.
- Mesosome is the site of the DNA replication.
- Mesosome contain protein and pigment to trap light and generate ATP.
