Care of calf at birth
- Observe that the newly born calf is normal
- Immediately after birth the mucus from mouth and nostril of calf be cleaned
- Mother should be allowed to lick it to dry
- Herd man may also assist in cleaning and drying the body of calf by use of a clean towel
- If calf lies motionless, artificial respiration may be given by dairyman
- Navel cord should be cut with sterilized scissors leaving 2” from the body and then entire navel cord be disinfected by dipping in to a cup containing tincture of iodine
- Provide assistance to a weak calf 3 hours after its birth by holding it up to its mother for nursing. If necessary, a stream of milk may be directed into the mouth of calf.
- Feed colostrum to calf as it is rich in antibody which provide immunity against various diseases.
- If possible follow the weaning system and house the calf separately.
- Weigh and identify the calf by tattooing.
- Dehorn the calf at an early age preferably within 15 days
- Remove any extra teats.
- Vaccinate the calf against HS at the age of 15 days and at the age of 3 month, vaccinate them against anthrax. After 15 days vaccinate against black quarter.
