Characteristics of Colostrum

  • Colostrum contains higher level of TS, ash, cl, casein, albumin, globulins, NPN constituents, steam volatile fatty acids and unsaturated fatty acids. Casein and albumin are about twice and globulin content 12 times more than normal milk. Colostrum is also rich in Ca, Mg, Fe, P, Vit. A, D, and E.

 

  • Colostrum deprived calves rarely survives and it is suggested that calf should receive 300 to 400 g of Ig during first 24 hours for complete protection which could be achieved from 7 kg colostrum.
