Development of Edema

  • It is abnormal accumulation watery constituents of blood and lymph in the lymph space of the tissue or the udder congestion is called Edema.
  • In this, swelling extends half way along the bally in front of udder in down calvers.

 

Some facts about edema

  • Sometimes it is regarded as alarming symptom but it normally recedes after calving.
  • First calf heifers have more edema than older cows and as such they become sometimes irritable at this time.
  • Steaming up or heavy feeding prior to calving, at calving time and immediately after calving does not cause udder congestion
  • Reducing the feed does not reduce edema
  • There is a significant correlation between edema and milk production but not with body condition at parturition time.
