Expulsion of placenta

  • The placenta is discharged within 5 to 6 hours after calving provided the cow is in good condition and parturition was normal.
  • If placenta is not discharged within 6 to 7 hours, it may be called “retained placenta”

Causes of retention of placenta

  • Old age of cow
  • Low condition of health
  • Brucellosis
  • Other bacterial infection
  • Lack of tonicity of muscles of uterus

 

Results of retained placenta

  • Inflammation of uterus
  • Production of toxic substances
  • Loss of appetite
  • Fever
  • Other evidences of severe trouble
