Guarding a cow against milk fever

  • Milk fever mostly occurs in high yielding mature cow
  • It seldom occurs in first calvers
  • To avoid mineral deficiency and milk fever, provide enough minerals specially calcium by giving bone meal in diets daily
  • Avoid prenating (milking prior to parturition) as there appears to be a close relation between nerves of reproductive organs and udder. Prenating is likely to delay parturition by few hours
  • Large doses of vitamin D may be given to cow a week prior to calving as it would be help full in preventing milk fever after parturition
