Hemorrhagic septicemia

  • It is an acute and serious infectious disease of cattle and buffalo characterized by sudden onset, high temperature, edematous swellings of subcutaneous tissue, particularly of the throat and acute gastroenteritis caused by pasteurella multiccida type 2 (or A) past haemolytica 50 to 100 % mortality.

Incubation period 1-3 days

  • Rise of temperature 1040F to 1060F.
  • Dullness, depression, anorexia, standing in one place with disinclination to remove, etc.
  • Head, dewlap and neck become swollen
  • The swelling is hard, hot tense and painful
  • There is considerable salivation and difficulty in swallowing
  • Often the tongue is swollen, hangs out of the mouth
  • Breathing becomes difficult on account of the oedema of the pharynx
  • Blood sometimes exudes from the nose
  • At first there is constipation but it is soon followed by diarrhoea
  • There is respiratory distress and death on account of haemorrhagic enteritis

 

Prevention and control

  • Isolation and disinfections should be carried out
  • Good feeding and adequate housing for animals during monsoon season is highly desirable
  • The disease can be prevented by inoculation of animals with haemorrhagic septicaemia vaccine
  • Proper disposal of infested carcasses and litter by burning or deep burial with lime is essential for checking soil infection and spread of the disease
  • The parenteral or even oral administration of sodium sulphadimidine gives excellent results
  • Parental or oral treatment with any of the tetracyclines or choloromphenicol also gives excellent result
  • Supportive treatment by the use of dexamethasone
