Packaging of poultry eggs

  • Eggs are classed according to size as extra-large, large, medium, and small.
  • To maintain egg quality, gather eggs several times a day, cool them in a wire basket or mechanical cooler.
  • Pack eggs the following morning by placing the small end down. Sort out small, irregular, dirty eggs. Produce infertile eggs by removing the males. Provide good clean nesting facilities. Market eggs frequently and sell them by grade.
  • The bulk of eggs and chicken presented in Nepalese markets today are not graded to conform to any standardization. The sealers sort them to different price group only on the basis of sizes.

Two classes of poultry are marketed

  1. Live poultry
  2. Dressed poultry

 

  • Most poultry sold by villagers in sold as live poultry. Live birds are graded according to health and vigor, feathering, fleshing and degree of freedom from defects.
  • Dressed poultry is graded according to conformation; fleshing; fat covering; freedom from pinfeathers freedom from cuts, tears and disjointed or broken bones, freedom from bruises; flesh blemishes; discolorations of skin; and freezer burn.
