Staking and Support Systems

Staking involves providing mechanical support to plants with weak stems or climbing habits to prevent lodging or bending. It is critical for vegetables, ornamentals, and certain fruit crops.

Objectives of Staking

• Prevent lodging and mechanical damage.
• Maintain canopy structure for optimal growth.
• Reduce fruit-soil contact, minimizing rot and pest incidence.
• Facilitate efficient harvesting.

Types of Support Systems

1. Single Stake: One stake per plant for crops like tomato and beans.
2. Double or Cross-Stake: Provides wider support for sprawling crops.
3. Trellis System: Vertical or horizontal wire support for vines such as grapes and cucumber.
4. Netting / Mesh Support: Espalier or climber crops benefit from mesh arrangements.
