- Ruminants have this special character of rumination.
- The process of regurgitating ingested food which is in form of cud in reticulum and again re-chewing and re-swallowing is called Rumination.
- When ingested food enters rumen, it breakdown food and pass it to reticulum
- Reticulum forms cuds like and regurgitate in mouth and rechewed so that it convert into further smaller particles
- Now this re-chewed cud is re-swallowed through oesophagus to Rumen and further digestion occurs.
- The main aim of Rumination is to breakdown food into further smaller particle and increase the surface area so that digestion rate becomes faster.
