Cochlea is concerned with hearing.
Mechanism involved:
- Pinna / auditory canal collect sound and strikes on ear drum which cause vibration of ear drum.
- Vibration of eardrum cause vibration of ear ossicles which increase intensity of sound.
- Oval window move to and fro which cause pressure change in perilymph of vestibular canal.
- This result in vibration of reisnner’s membrane, changes pressure in endolymph of middle canal.
- Phonoreceptors cell become stimulated and hair cells of organ of corti bent.
- Pressure change in middle canal endolymph causes the rippling of basilar membrane. This is concerned with frequency and intensity of sound.
- Now, stimulated phonoreceptor cells create nerve impulse which is conducted to brain by auditory nerve then after sound can be heard.
