About Lesson

Intestinal Juice

Components/composition

  • Water
  • Hormones
  • Digestive enzymes
  • Mucus
  • Inorganic(Na,K, Ca etc.) and organic(Enterokinase, erepsine, arginase etc.) constituents

Function

  • Neutralize acid coming from stomach.
  • Contains digestive enzymes which help in digestion of food. Also allow for absorption.
  • Enterokinase present in intestinal juice activates trypsinogen i.e. into trypsin.

Regulation:

  • Intestinal juice is regulated by Hormonal and Nervous mechanisms.

Hormonal Regulation:

When chyme enters small intestine then intestinal mucosa is stimulated and secrets hormones secretin and CCK.

  • these hormone promote to secret intestinal juice

Nervous mechanism:

  • Intestinal juice secretion is high when Parasympathetic nerves stimulated and secretion is low with stimulation of sympathetic nerve.
  • Local nervous reflexes increase the secretion of intestinal juice.
