Regional inequality
- The Muluki Ain excluded many occupational groups from the Tarai region, reflecting their marginalization by the Kathmandu-based government.
- The Shah/Rana rulers viewed the Tarai primarily as a revenue-generating area (through taxes and land grants), not as a region requiring social or economic development.
- Land grants (birtas) were mainly given to Parbatiya courtiers, showing neglect towards local Tarai inhabitants and Madhesi Hindu groups (Maithili, Bhojpuri, Avadhi speakers).
- The rulers showed little concern for the welfare of indigenous Tarai communities.
- There is regional income inequality in Nepal:
- Brahmans and Chhetris in the Far Western Region have income levels only slightly higher than Dalits in the Central Region.
- Newars in the Central Region (Kathmandu Valley) have twice the per capita income of Newars in the Eastern Region.
- These disparities highlight socioeconomic inequality and regional imbalance in Nepal.
